When San Francisco blogger Sasha McGee noticed that Gavin Newsom was being feted by PG&E and AT&T at the Denver convention, it wasn't much of a surprise to see a DLC candidate running for governor of the largest state. What was a surprise, was that Moveon was also listed as a sponsor.Moveon is Not Greenwashing Gavin Newsom's Corporate Party
If the Founding Fathers could see us all now, they would be appalled. As America has been trained to treat the presidency as a royal throne, we have stomped all over the very anti-royalist revolution that brought this nation into being. As I show in my weekly newspaper column today, the presidential-palooza that has come to dominate every media instrument - TV, radio, newspapers, blogs, email - has suffocated the most fundamental tenets of Jeffersonian democracy.
So I have this Obama banner of my own design....and MoveOn announced a competition for Obama-related artwork last week. As usual with MoveOn, they posted the event with very short notice. The deadline has passed; winners will be notified before midnite tonight.
Here's my banner first displayed at the King County convention in Seattle. It's stitched layers of fabric with glittering embellishments, featuring Washington State & its icons: the Space needle, salmon, apple, Mt. Rainier and evergreens.
It was a big hit! So I made art on the reverse side for the 7th CD caucus.
Take the jump, lots more pictures below.
John McNicotine is now for the tobacco lobby after years of working against it. He not only opposes the cigarette taxes he used to support but also opposes FDA regulation of the tobacco industry after years of supporting it. McNicotine is an ex-smoker and should understand just how addictive nicotine is, and he even acknowledged the exceptionally high death rate for tobacco users when he joked that cigarette exports to Iran were part of his plot to kill Iranian citizens. For McNicotine to cave in to the tobacco cartel is the ultimate flip-flop:

Why has McNicotine caved in to the interests of the tobacco drug cartel? It couldn't possibly have anything to do with hiring tobacco lobbyist Charlie Black as his senior adviser. Move along folks. There's nothing to see here:

Now let's use the traditional Rethug "moral values" and "sanctity of life" frames against McNicotine! There's more in the flip.
Supporters of single payer health care -- many of them people who've worked on this issue for years and paved the way for today's universal health care debate -- recently launched an online petition asking MoveOn staff to consult MoveOn members on the best way to win health care for everyone.
The issue at hand is MoveOn's participation in the Health Care for America Now coalition, an alliance of groups including SEIU, Planned Parenthood, AFSCME, and USAction who've launched a big effort to win universal health care. Health Care for America Now (HCAN) is supporting the National Public Health Insurance approach. The folks who are petitioning favor a Single Payer strategy and are asking us to consult MoveOn members on the question.
We're big fans of online petitions! And this one's reasonable enough.
In fact, we had already consulted MoveOn members on these two approaches.
This morning a variety of single-payer healthcare advocacy organizations including
Progressive Democrats of America, Healthcare Now, PNHP and All Unions Committee For Single Payer Health Care are petitioning MoveOn.
I've been asked to explain to Daily Kos readers what's happening and ask you to support single-payer healthcare in the United States by signing the petition to MoveOn.
There is a big difference between movement ideology and pure partisanship - a difference pretty well spelled out in today's story about Evan Bayh in the New York Times.
This is pimping a diary that needs to be an ACTION item, but diarist seems to have gone to bed.
I don't know the protocol for keeping this "up", but here is the original diary: New MoveOn Ad Points Out McCain's Hypocrisy. . . AGAIN
I think this ad is great! Of course, there are some who hate anything MoveOn does, but someone needed to point out the hyprocrisy involved in McCain telling people to get back to work.
jump for more. . .
I realize that this is not much of a diary, but it seems like the fastest way to get this information out there. There are a couple of events here in H-town that are not getting much run.
First, Moveon.org is organizing a rally tomorrow in downotwn to deliver a petition to the gop and oil companies. I wish they had sent his out sooner. It seems like if you want a good representation of the progressives in Houston, you should tell us more than 24 hours in advance...but oh well.
Anyway, I wanted to pass it along as quickly as I could - so here you go:
Okay, I'm pretty darn broke. BUT, I just remembered that old 1st marriage wedding band that is pretty darn big and heavy that is just gathering dust in a drawer. So, I'm heading to the local jeweler to sell it. I've never done that before, but they have a sign up that says, "We Buy Gold." So, what the heck! All proceeds to get donated, today.
I challenge everyone, no matter how tight it is, can you find a way to give MoveOn, Barack Obama, and Sierra Club even 5 bucks each?
And, how about sharing some new or old ideas for raising money for the cause. Emphasis on what can ya' do today to DONATE TODAY?
Two good battleground ads today from our friends MoveOn.org and the Sierra Club on the issue of gas prices. They are smartly opening up a front on McCain re: his massive spike in contributions from the oil industry.
Also, the MoveOn ad, called "Gimmick", does an excellent job of beginning to shift the debate from gas prices to McCain's credibility, a tactic that worked well for Obama prior to the IN and NC primaries against Senator Clinton.
Although I must say, MoveOn has done a much better job this cycle using real people talking to the camera. I for one think this is effective.
MoveOn, "Gimmick"
About fucking time!!!
why can't the Obama campaign step up once in a while and correct perception problems this way...
Media Matters is spending about $100,000 to air the ad on mostly cable in Washington and New York, according to an aide for the liberal media watchdog group.
I had no idea that Media Matters ran commercials... apparently they do. You can join their group here
Quick diary here folks, new TV spot from MoveOn.org which I thought was worth sharing, as part of their kick-off to the youth-mobilization effort:
Ambinder reports it will be run on MTV and Comedy Central at a cost of $150,000. Let's hope it's the beginning of a serious concerted effort to mobilize the younger voters, who turned out in the primaries, but need to be out in the general election in a big way...in the meantime, enjoy "Hope."
Jesse Taylor at Pandagon had a remarkably insightful piece today about the wingnut carping over the Barack Obama speech in Berlin, the media reaction, and his popularity generally. I really think this is important to understand. The right has always held a goal of minimizing political participation; normally this is done through voter suppression, onerous voter ID or ballot access laws, and generally disenfranchising those for whom it is hardest to engage in the process. Now they've taken it a step further, basically planting the seed that ANY participation whatsoever, not just voting but showing up for a rally or working a phone bank or donating money, is toxic and inherently fascistic. Because their deficit in this election year is enthusiasm, they're trying to make such support and excitement untenable. Behold:
Hi Everyone,
I recently blogged on who and what is Progressive Future, and why and where you could get more information, contribute to the cause, or even consider working for it. Since then the diary has been rescued, and lively debate has ensued. So, we've had some fun, and you might still want to check that out.
This diary is something of an update to that one. If you'll follow me under the fold, you can find out where today's canvas team is in San Francisco, where else Progressive Future is currently canvassing in the USA, and where to watch for more information and good times-- directly from Progressive Future!
However it best works for you, don't miss these chances for getting involved in taking our netroots-type organizing offline, and into the heart of America's neighborhoods!
I have an idea for taking on the language of racial innuendo on Fox News that I'm hoping many of you can get behind.
Last night, I was reading a thread, Fox News: Racism Is Their Marketing Plan. UPDATED w/Colbert Video, on the 620,000 petitions--collected by MoveOn and Color of Change—that had been delivered to Fox News asking them to rein in their racial innuendo / hate speech. Fox refused these petitions, which were presented later that night by the rapper Nas on the Colbert Report.
I got the idea, prompted by a comment KingOneEye, the thread's diarist, that copies of these petitions should next be submitted to Fox's principle sponsors, such as Toyota. Sponsors might get seriously queasy if they are called on Fox New's frequently revolting and incendiary racist propaganda.
